Review extortion on Google: what to do when someone demands money

"Refund me or I’ll give you one star." That message is a crime, not a negotiation. How to react, what to keep, and how to turn the threat into a removal case.

Published 3 min read

The message arrives by email, on WhatsApp, or in a reply to a review: “Refund me in full and I’ll take my review down.” Sometimes it comes before the review: “If you don’t make a gesture, I’ll let people know on Google.” Sometimes it comes from a complete stranger offering, for a fee, to “clean up” a series of reviews they posted themselves.

In every case, you are facing an extortion attempt. And it is, paradoxically, one of the most favourable situations for obtaining a removal, provided you react correctly.

What the law says

Under French law, extortion is obtaining money or the waiver of a right by threat (article 312-1 of the Criminal Code). Blackmail is threatening to reveal or allege facts damaging to someone’s honour in order to obtain an advantage (article 312-10). Threatening to post or keep a negative review in exchange for a refund or a payment falls under these qualifications. Most other jurisdictions have close equivalents.

These are criminal offences, carrying prison sentences. You can file a complaint.

What Google’s rules say

Google’s policies explicitly prohibit content posted for extortion, and class it among illegal or restricted content. A review accompanied by a demand for payment in exchange for removal can be removed, and the report is generally handled faster than other categories when the proof is attached.

What to do, in order

1. Do not pay, do not negotiate

A payment solves nothing: it confirms the method works, and the review often returns under another account. It also erases your case, since you will have “settled”.

2. Keep everything, in its original form

  • The messages, with headers or metadata (the full email, not just a screenshot).
  • Dated screenshots of the review and the author’s profile.
  • The history of the relationship: order, service, earlier exchanges.

If the stakes are high, a bailiff’s report fixes the evidence beyond dispute.

3. Reply once, in writing, calmly

A single factual reply that closes the door:

We do not act on requests for payment conditional on the removal or publication of a review. We have kept your messages and reported the situation.

Then nothing more. Every further exchange is a chance for the other side to rephrase and weaken the evidence.

4. Report to Google with the proof

Through the Reviews Management Tool, choose the category matching extortion or illegal content, and attach the messages. Explicitly mention the demand for payment in exchange for removal. It is one of the rare cases where the first report frequently succeeds.

5. File a complaint

A complaint at the police station, or online where available, takes little time and strengthens every other strand: the reference number can be cited in the report to Google and in any formal notice.

The case of an attack followed by an “offer of services”

A growing variant: a series of negative reviews lands, then a message arrives offering to “manage your reputation” for a subscription. The sender is the author of the series, or linked to them.

The steps are the same, with added urgency: the series drags the rating down every day. Document the pattern (accounts, dates, wording) immediately, report in bulk with proof of the commercial offer, and file a complaint. Never respond to the offer, even to “buy time”.

What to reply publicly to the review

If the review is already up, a short public reply protects your profile while it is processed:

This review was followed by a demand for payment in exchange for its removal. We have reported this attempt to Google and to the authorities.

Factual, no name, no detail. Prospects understand immediately.

Realistic timelines

A documented extortion report is often handled within days. More complex cases, with several accounts or an anonymous author, take a few weeks and may require legal escalation to identify the author.

If you are facing a live threat, do not waste time hesitating: send us the messages and the review. Extortion cases are handled as a priority.

Your rating took years to build. Don’t let bad reviews take it in a week.
